Do we need to teach Read Write Inc. Phonics in order to use Literacy and Language?

Your school does not need to teach Read Write Inc. Phonics to teach Literacy and Language. However, if a school teaches Phonics, then Literacy and Language would be an ideal next step.

Schools may also choose to use Read Write Inc. Comprehension as a transition between Phonics and Literacy and Language.

How is it taught?

There are six units of work for each year group. Each unit is designed to be used over three weeks, but can also be used more flexibly:

Week 1: Reading fiction

Week 2: Writing fiction

Week 3: Reading and writing non-fiction

Children write in a daily log book so writing becomes a habit, recording thoughts, ideas and reactions to the text. Thinking and discussion skills are practised through a daily ‘Big Question’ which children debate.
